Men's Cross Country 5th At Stanford Invitational
Sept. 28, 2002
Palo Alto, Calif. - Under ideal running conditions at the University Golf Course, the Gaucho men struggled to a 5th-place finish at the Stanford Invitational, falling to conference foe Cal Poly. Fifth-year senior Brandon von Guenthner (Laguna Niguel, CA) led the way for the Gauchos in 24th. Von Guenthner, a steeplechaser and all-conference cross country runner in 2000, covered the hilly, less-than-8000 meter course in 24:26.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from Huntington Beach, California sophomore Scott Brandos (Edison HS) who filled the number two spot for the Gauchos, coming in 41st (24:48). Behind Brandos, junior transfer Curly Guillen (Santa Barbara CC) finished two seconds back in 44th.
Ian Dobson, running unattached, was the race winner finishing in 23:27. The University of New Mexico was the overall team champion with a score of 61, with Big West conference rival Cal Poly second with 66 points. Host Stanford finished in 3rd with 84 points ahead of Division 2 power UC Davis (150) in 4th, with the Gauchos managing to hold off Pac-10 squads UCLA (7th) and Cal (8th).
The Gauchos will return to action on October 19th, when the team will split up. One group will fly to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Pre-NCAA meet, while a second group of Gauchos will run at the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo.
