The UC Santa Barbara men's cross country team travel to the Palo Alto, Ca. this weekend to compete against 32 teams in the Stanford Invite. The meet was headlined by Stanford, currently ranked 6th, Cal Berkeley, Adam State, ranked 2nd in Division II, and Chico, ranked 5th in Division II. In the near perfect conditions on the Stanford Golf course the Gauchos, raced to a team finish of 3rd place, finishing with a total of 97 points, behind Stanford's 37, and Cal's 66. The gauchos outpaced four other Big West conference teams, Long Beach State in 10th place, UC Davis in 11th place, Fullerton in 15th and UC Irvine in 18th.
Coach Avery Blackwell was very encouraged by the performance "Going into the race we had three guys that we could count on, so we were really looking for that 4th and 5th guy to step up and make an impact. Mike Powers and Julian DeRubira Both did that today and they showed that they were serious about what this team could accomplish." The gap between the Gauchos' top runner and their 5th was 17 seconds and it was this tight grouping that moved them in front of Adam State for a third place finish.
The top runner of the day was Mike Powers finishing in 19th place with a time of 24:36, teammate Tim Aukshunas finished just behind him in a time of 24:38. Julian DeRubira was the 3rd Gaucho coming in 28th place with a time of 24:49, followed closely by Micah Tyhurst in 29th and Scott Smith in 32nd. Spencer Rotan crossed the line as the 6th Gaucho in 53rd place and Erik Aardal rounded out the top seven in 84th place.
