SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Cardiasmenos was the top finisher for UCSB at Saturday's Cal Poly Invitational taking 24th in a time of 27:20.6. The Gauchos finished 4th out of 7 teams on the hilly 8 kilometer Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course.
Stanford, the top ranked program in the nation displayed its depth, running a 'B' squad that won the meet with a scant 21 point total. The host Mustangs also fielding a 'B' team took second with 40 points. UC Irvine was 3rd with 81 followed by UCSB in 4th at 113, ahead of CS Northridge (131), Sacramento State (150) and Pepperdine (182). Stanford, Cal Poly and UCSB all sent their top seven men to the Pre-National Meet held the same day in Iowa.
Sophomore Ben Berkowitz was the second Gaucho across the line finishing in 30th place with a time of 27:34.1, a 48 second improvement over his feshman year mark on the same course. A pack of three Gauchos closed out the scoring for UCSB, with freshman Mike Powers in 34th, junior Scott McConville in 35th and freshman Micah Tyhurst in 36th.
Robert Smitson, competing unattached won the race with in time of 25:49.4, just off Adam Boothe's course record of 25:49.0 set in 2000 for Cal Poly.
