Junior Andrew Pilavjian ran a 24:10.9 over the 8K course to lead the UC Santa Barbara men's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Northridge Invitational Saturday in Van Nuys, Calif.
Pilavjian finished second among collegiate runners in the race. His pace was 4:51.9. Junior Doug Whichard ran a 24:21.8 and sophomore Juan Paredes clocked in at 24:31.5 to finish fourth and seventh respectively.
As a team, UCSB finished ahead of UC Riverside by a 43-46 score. Cal State Fullerton (52 points) finished third, Westmont College (96 points) was fourth and the host school, Cal State Northridge (145 points) was fifth.
In addition to the three top-10 finishers, the Gauchos had three other solid performances in the meet. Junior Anthony Masci was 13th in a time of 24:49.8 while sophomores Bhavik Kanzaria (25:10.4) and Michael Wysocki (25:26.3) were 17th and 20th respectively.
UCSB sent a very limited women's team to the Northridge Invitational. The top Gaucho runners were at the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
Sophomore Cassie Brooker was Santa Barbara's top finisher. Brooker ran a 21:53.5 in the 6K race. She finished 13th. Another sophomore, Callie Mulgannon, ran 21:57.8 and in 16th-place.
Only two other Gaucho runners finished among the top-50. Freshman Emily Gordon (25:02.4) was 48th while senior Sheniece Vargas (25:10.8) was 50th.
The UCSB men's and women's teams will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they head to the Fullerton Invitational.
