Cross Country Heads North for NCAA West Regional
Nov. 13, 2008
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UCSB cross country will travel north this weekend to compete at the 2008 NCAA West Regional. The meet will take place at the Stanford Golf Course on Saturday, Nov. 15. First up will be the women's 6,000 meter race at 11:00 a.m., followed by the men's 10,000 meter race at 12:00 noon.
Danielle Domenichelli will lead the women's squad in Saturday's race. She finished 41st last season but has improved substantially since then, and is a contender for individual advancement to the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA determines the criteria for at-large advancement after the conclusion of the race, so there is no hard-set placement she needs to meet. Domenichelli will probably need to finish in the top 20-25 runners to advance, and she is capable of finishing in the top 10.
Scott Smith has a good chance to advance individually in the men's race. His sights are set on finishing in the top 15, which should be high enough to earn an at-large berth. Julian deRubira has been improving all season and has an outside shot to advance if he finishes in the top 25.
To advance to Nationals as a team, the men will need to finish around sixth place. They would need to defeat a nationally-ranked team to do this, which might be possible if the top runners place well and the fourth and fifth runners can finish in the high 40s to low 50s.
The defending champions of the men's race are the Oregon Ducks, who are also the defending national champions. Oregon is also home to the region's defending individual champion, Galen Rupp.
Stanford are the defending champions of the women's race. They have captured the past nine West Regional titles and the past three NCAA Titles. However, the Washington Huskies and Oregon Ducks are considered the favorites to win this year, as they sit at No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation.
In last season's Regionals, the Gaucho women took fifth place and the men took ninth.
