The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball earned an at-large bid in this year's Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and will visit San Diego State for the first round on Wednesday, March 20 at the Viejas Arena. Game time will be announced on Tuesday.
The Gauchos (16-16, 11-7 Big West) finished fourth in conference play with a loss to Cal Poly in the Semifinals Round of the Big West Tournament. Meanwhile, the Aztecs captured the Mountain West regular season title with a 26-6 overall record, going 15-1 in conference play. The winner of this matchup will face the victor of the Brigham Young-Idaho State pairing in the second round of the WNIT. The location, date and time are all yet to be determined.
The Gauchos are 6-14 in the all-time series with the Aztecs, but won the last time the teams faced each other in a 78-50 decision at the Thunderdome on January 1st, 1999.
UCSB's last trip to the WNIT dates back to 2011 when the Gauchos fell in the first round to USC 67-64 at the Galen Center. The last time the Gauchos reached the second round of the WNIT was in 2007 when they defeated the University of San Diego 75-63 and earned a trip to Oregon where they eventually fell to the Ducks 70-54.
The Women's National Invitation Tournament includes 64 Division 1 women's basketball teams who compete at participating schools including the semifinals and championships. The tournament is single elimination.
