When the Gauchos need a leader on the floor this season, their eyes will immediately fall on Nicole Nesbit. She first took a leadership role last year as she adjusted to being a perennial starter for UCSB. But even before then, she could be a game changer for her team, even if she was coming off the bench.
The senior point guard started her Gaucho career as a spark off the bench, a role she excelled in, as she was named the Big West Sixth Player of the Year and honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore.
Nesbit ascended into a starting spot as a junior, and in doing so took more of a leadership role on the team. She averaged 10.5 points per game and recorded 94 assists on the season, as she led UCSB to a WNIT berth.
One of her marquee moments from last season was her game-winning layup over Hawai'i that gave the Rainbow Wahine their only home loss in Big West play.
On the verge of history, Nesbit is well on pace to eclipse the 1,000 career-point mark this season, becoming just the 25th Gaucho in history to do so. Her career total entering the season is 835 points.
Nesbit and the rest of the Gauchos will open the 2013-14 season on Monday, Nov. 4 in the Thunderdome at 7 p.m. when they host Vanguard in an exhibition game.
Great season ticket packages are available for the Gauchos. This year's home schedule includes plenty of high-profile matchups including Arizona, Utah State, and San Diego State, a rematch of last season's WNIT game.
