UCSB Sets a School Record for Blocks in Defeat to Oregon State
Feb. 24, 2009
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Playing in front of a large and pink-clad crowd, in honor of the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team's Pink Zone game, the Gauchos set a school record for blocked shots in a game against Oregon State.
UCSB tallied 12 total blocks in Tuesday's non-conference game, besting the previous mark - set on Dec. 31, 1990 against Missouri - by one. Only two other teams this decade had even broken the top-10 mark for blocked shots in a game with the 2003-04 team doing it twice and the 1999-2000 squad doing it once.
Alas, it wasn't enough for UCSB to get the win against the Beavers, falling 70-51 at the Thunderdome in front of 1,360 fans.
Kat Suderman led the Gaucho charge with three swats - a season-high - while Meagan Williams, Lauren Pedersen and Jenna Green each recorded two. Emilie Johnson recorded her second career block and Ariana Gnekow had her third career block. Margaret Johnson also tallied a block, giving the Gauchos a dozen.
"They attacked the hole a lot and so it kind of gave us opportunities to get hands on those balls when people were going up," Suderman said. "We work on help-side defense and when we do it right and we're in the place that we need to be we can take advantage of the opportunity."
Green led the Gauchos (17-9 overall) in scoring with 12 points while Pedersen added 11 to go with her four rebounds. Sha'Rae Gibbons had six points and five assists. Chris Spencer chipped in with five points and four rebounds.
Talisa Rhea led Oregon State (16-10) with 23 points.
UCSB's players and coaches were decked out in pink gear for the Pink Zone game to raise breast cancer awareness. The players designed their own warm-up shirts which were sold to the fans with a portion of the proceeds going toward breast cancer research. Fans throughout the Thunderdome wore pink and many purchased pink hats, identical to what the baseball team wore during its 7-6 victory over UCLA earlier on Tuesday.
UCSB returns to Big West play on Saturday afternoon at the Thunderdome when it hosts Cal State Northridge at the Thunderdome at 2 p.m. This is the team's Senior Day when UCSB will honor Sha'Rae Gibbons, Jenna Green, Lauren Pedersen, Kat Suderman and Whitney Warren.
