UCSB Names Calamity McEntire Director of Women's Basketball Operations

July 5, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Calamity McEntire, formerly an assistant coach at Fresno State, has joined the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team as the program's first-ever director of operations, head coach Mark French announced Wednesday.

McEntire will assist the Gaucho coaching staff by taking on a number of administrative responsibilities, including coordination of all camps and clinics as well as team travel. She will also serve as UCSB's video coordinator, which involves scouting opponents and breaking down film to aid in player development. In addition, the native of Kiowa, Okla., will spearhead the program's fund-raising efforts and provide recruiting assistance. McEntire came to Santa Barbara in May to work in a part-time capacity with Mark French Basketball Camps.

"We have been looking to add a director of basketball operations position for some time, and Calamity is a natural fit with her background in coaching," French stated. "She fell into our lap thanks to her prior relationship with Coach McDivitt, and has already done an outstanding job the past few months coordinating our summer camps. Now as a full-time staff member, Calamity will allow our coaching staff to concentrate more heavily on player development and recruiting."

McEntire spent the 2004-05 and 2005-06 campaigns at Fresno State, helping the Bulldogs advance to the Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament both years. While primarily mentoring FSU's post players, she was also heavily involved with recruiting and oversaw the program's community outreach endeavors.

After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 2003 with a degree in education/sports management, McEntire worked as the assistant manager for office and store operations at Kessler Team Sports in Knoxville, Tenn. While a student, she was a team manager for the Lady Vols women's basketball program from 2001-03, serving as head manager her final year. In addition, McEntire held the titles of gym director and equipment manager during Pat Summit Summer Basketball Camps for three years.

McEntire transferred to UT from Eastern Oklahoma State College, where she played two seasons and led the Mountaineers to a No. 4 national junior college ranking as a sophomore. She served as a student assistant coach for half a season at EOSC and also coached at the AAU level in Canadian, Okla.

"I'm very happy to be here at UCSB. This is a place where I can continue to learn and grow in my career while working with an outstanding coaching staff," McEntire said. "Coach French has built a great tradition at UCSB over the last 20 years and I look forward helping the program in any way I can."
