LaShay Fears Leaves UCSB, Ashley Hall Assumes Role as Team Manager
Aug. 21, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior point guard LaShay Fears has decided to leave the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball program and sophomore forward Ashley Hall will act as a team manager in 2007-08, head coach Mark French announced Tuesday.
Fears, a native of Palmdale, Calif., will not return for her junior season with the Gauchos after leading the team averaging 33.9 minutes per game last season. She appeared in all but two games in 2006-07, posting career-bests of 9.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists and was second on the team with 42 three-pointers and 48 steals. The two games she missed last season were the first two times she was not in the lineup during her two years at UCSB. The 5' 7" point guard is looking to transfer to another program.
"We wish LaShay the very best in the future," French said. "I'd like to thank her for the two great years she had with our program and we hope she finds similar success moving forward."
In other roster moves, Hall will not compete for the Gauchos in 2007-08 but will remain actively involved with the program as a team manager. An Antioch, Calif. native, Hall appeared in 16 games for UCSB as a freshman last season, averaging 0.1 points and 0.3 rebounds.
With the departure of Fears and Hall, the Gauchos will enter the upcoming season with an active roster of 14. UCSB will feature 10 returning letterwinners - including a pair of All-Big West performers, the reigning Big West Freshman of the Year, and three true freshmen. Santa Barbara posted an overall record of 19-14 in 2006-07 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
