Freshman Point Guard Kim Smith Joins the Gauchos

Oct. 5, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Kim Smith, a 5'5" freshman point guard from Novato, Calif., has joined the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team, head coach Mark French announced Wednesday.

Smith participated in preseason conditioning and workouts with the Gauchos over the past two weeks before earning a roster spot as a non-scholarship walk-on. Her addition gives UCSB a 12-player active roster heading into the upcoming 2005-06 campaign.

"We are delighted to have Kim join our program. She is quick and athletic and has a true point guard mentality - very talkative and energetic on the court," French stated. "With Sha'Rae Gibbons' departure, we were looking to add another point guard, and it was fortuitous that Kim decided to attend UCSB."

Smith is a 2005 graduate of Novato High School, where she capped her three-year varsity career by averaging 13.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.8 per game assists en route to Marin County Athletic League MVP honors as a senior. She buried 42 three-pointers in 2004-05, including six trifectas during a career-high 23-point performance against Terra Linda. An All-MCAL performer in 2002-03 and 2003-04 as well, Smith also earned four varsity letters apiece in tennis and track and field, qualifying for the CIF State Championship meet as a sprinter. An outstanding student, she is a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation.

Smith will join a UCSB program that posted a 21-9 overall record in 2004-05 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight year. In addition, the Gauchos captured an unprecedented 10th consecutive Big West Conference regular season title, giving them the longest current streak of outright league titles in the country. Santa Barbara's .804 winning percentage (205 wins, 50 losses) since the start of the 1997-98 campaign ranks fifth-best nationally over that span.

The Gauchos' 2005-06 campaign begins with a pair of early-November exhibition contests in the Thunderdome followed by a Nov. 18 road game at defending national runner-up Michigan State.
