SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Erica Shelton pounded home a penalty kick in the 54th minute and the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team held on for its second straight win, 1-0 at San Diego State.
The Gauchos (5-5-1) were outshot by the Aztecs (5-4-2) 14-7 overall and 4-2 in shots on goal, but were able to muster-up enough offense to win by a 1-0 score for the second straight game. It is UCSB's first two-game winning streak of the 2011 season.
With the game scoreless, Santa Barbara was awarded a penalty kick at the 53:58 mark when midfielder Sophie Metz was whistled for a foul in the penalty box. After Gaucho midfielder Katy Roby beat two Aztec defenders, she was felled in the box by Metz. Shelton was tabbed to attempt the kick and converted. It was her first goal of the season and it pushed the Gauchos back to the break-even mark for the year.
UCSB remains on the road for one more game. The Gauchos travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday to take-on the Roadrunners at 5:00 p.m., before opening Big West play at home on Friday, Sept. 30 against Long Beach State.
