Shelton Earns Big West Offensive Player of the Week Honor
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore forward Erica Shelton (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week after scoring both goals in UC Santa Barbara's matches against San Diego State and Cal State Bakersfield.
Shelton's goals were her first of the season and both came in second halves and allowed the Gauchos to extend their unbeaten streak to three game in a row.
On Sept. 21 at San Diego State, her penalty kick in the 56th minute was the only goal in UCSB's 1-0 victory and then, on Sunday, she scored on a direct free kick in the 77th minute to help the Gauchos forge a 1-1 double overtime tie at Cal State Bakersfield.
"Erica has worked very hard and has a high soccer I.Q.," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "She understands the opportunity that she has been given to play soccer and go to college, and she is not letting it pass her by."
Shelton is the first Santa Barbara player to earn Player of the Week honors in 2011.
UCSB hosts Long Beach State to open Big West Conference play on Friday, Sept. 30. The Gauchos and 49ers, who went to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
Tickets for all Gaucho soccer games can be purchased from the Ticket Office in the Intercollegiate Building on campus, by calling 805-893-UCSB or online by clicking here.
