• UCSB Ends Regular Season Oct. 28
UC Santa Barbara will play its final regular season game on Friday, Oct. 28 when it hosts Cal Poly in a 7:00 p.m. game at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The game will be the final home appearance for several Gaucho seniors who will be saluted prior to kickoff. Tickets for the match, and all UCSB events, can be purchased by calling 805-893-UCSB, from the Ticket Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building on campus or online by clicking here.
• The Gaucho Record
UCSB enters its Friday night game at Pacific with an overall record of 6-9-2 and a Big West record of 1-4-0. In their last game, the Gauchos snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-0 home win over UC Riverside.
• Finally, Some Breathing Room
After a run of seven consecutive games that were either decided by one goal or ended in a tie, UCSB had to be happy with a two-goal margin in its last game. In particular, the Gauchos had to be happy that the two-goal margin was in their favor as they defeated UC Riverside 2-0. Through 17 matches this season, 13 have either ended in a tie or finished with a one-goal margin
• A Step In The Right Direction
After a stretch of four matches, two of which went overtime, that saw them total a mere two goals, the Gauchos scored two in their last contest against UC Riverside. The two goal output equaled UCSB's second highest total of the season and it was just the third time this year that they scored more than one in a game. In 17 outings, the Gauchos have scored 16 goals in 2011.
• Ortega Heats Up
Junior Erin Ortega has scored three goals for Santa Barbara in 2011. She is tied for second on the team and her third score, which gave the Gauchos a 1-0 lead over UC Riverside on Sunday, was a tremendous individual effort. When the Highlanders tried to clear a ball out of the box in the second half, an outstretched Ortega intercepted the pass and drove, nearly uncontested, towards the goal. She then put a perfectly placed shot into the left post. In addition to her three goals, she also has a pair of assists which is tied for the team-lead.
• Shelton's Return Sparks Gauchos
Midfielder Erica Shelton returned to the UCSB lineup on Sunday against UC Riverside and the difference in the team's play was stark. Shelton was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week after scoring goals in the Gauchos' 1-0 win at San Diego State and 1-1 tie at Cal State Bakersfield, results that extended their unbeaten streak to a season-best three in a row. She then injured her knee and missed the team's next four games, all losses. In her return against the Highlanders, Shelton played 69 minutes and recorded a team-high six shots, two of which were on frame.
• A Fresh Face
Freshman Indiana Mead notched UCSB's second goal in the win over UC Riverside, her third of the season. Mead is tied with Erin Ortega for second on the team in goals and she leads all Gaucho freshmen in goals and points.
• Oh, Henry!
Sophomore goalkeeper Makenna Henry has played all 1,575 minutes for UCSB this season. On Sunday, she earned her sixth win and her fifth shutout, lowering her goals against average to 1.20. In her last eight contests, Henry has allowed seven goals and posted a 0.86 goals against average. In fact, if you subtract two overtime penalty kick goals, she has actually allowed just five scores in the last eight games for a goals against average of 0.62. In her two seasons at UCSB, Henry has played 3,212 minutes, allowed 38 goals, recorded a 1.06 goals against and 11 shutouts.
