• The Gaucho Record
UCSB enters Friday night's season finale against Cal Poly with an overall record of 6-11-2 and a Big West record of 1-6-0. The Gauchos have lost two straight and six of their last seven. Last weekend, they traveled north and lost a pair of matches. On Oct. 21, they dropped a 2-1 decision at Pacific and on Oct. 23 they were blanked at UC Davis, 2-0.
• Seniors Play Final Games At UCSB
Prior to Friday's game against Cal Poly, UCSB will salute 10 players who will be participating in their final games as Gauchos. Eight of the players who will be recognized are listed as seniors on the roster and two others are in their fourth year, having redshirted a season. The 10 players are Alyssa Benjamin, Cory Yoshida, Brooke Salyer, Alexa Stringer, Nicole Romanowski, Kathleen Matthew, Danika Johnson, Kat Serdio, Alyssa Oldham and Katy Roby
• Gauchos Grapple For Goals
As the 2011 season winds down, the Gauchos continue to search for offense. After scoring two goals in an Oct. 16 win over UC Riverside, UCSB could muster just one tally in last weekend's matches at Pacific and UC Davis. On Sunday at Davis, the Gauchos were shutout for the sixth time this season. In 19 matches, they have scored just 17 goals and have scored more than one just three times. Also, when they were beaten 2-1 at Pacific, it was the 11th one-goal game of the season, eight of which have been losses.
• Benjamin Gets A Goal To Bookend Her Career
Senior defender Alyssa Benjamin scored Santa Barbara's only goal last weekend. The tally against Pacific was her first of the season and second of her career. Benjamin's first career goal came early in her freshman season against the University of San Diego.
• Good News, Bad News On Scoring Front
The obvious bad news for the Gauchos is that they just don't score many goals. The good news is, their top five scorers from this season will return in 2012. Junior Dyanne Anderson leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points while junior Erin Ortega is second on the team with three goals and two assists for eight points. Freshman Indiana Mead has three goals for six points and sophomore Erica Shelton has two goals and two assists, also for six points. Finally, freshman Kelly McGrath has one goal and one assist for three points.
• Good News, Bad News On The Score-Stopping Front
The bad news for the Gauchos defensively is that they will graduate most of their top defenders. Gone will be Alyssa Benjamin, Nicole Romanowski, Kathleen Matthew and Alexa Stringer. The good news is that the last line of defense, sophomore goalkeeper Makenna Henry, still has two years remaining. Henry has played all 1,755 minutes for UCSB this season. At times, the Fountain Valley, Calif., native has been spectacular. She has 63 saves on the season, a save percentage of .716 and a goals against average of 1.28. Henry has also had five complete game shutouts in 2011.
