SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior defender Paige Gankema was one of 11 players across the nation to be selected to the Soccer America Women's Team of the Week, announced the publication Wednesday.
Gankema, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, provided a game-winning goal and anchored a stout defense in helping the Gauchos post a 3-0 record on the heels of a tough 0-4-1 start. Gankema helped UCSB dent the win column for the first time in 2012 with her first career goal in a 1-0 triumph at Cal State Bakersfield on Monday, Sept. 10. It was her only shot attempt of the match.
She started and played an average of 85 minutes per match as UCSB limited its three opponents to just two goals and 12 shots on goal. She was key in the Gauchos' 3-1 win against San Francisco (Sept. 14) and 2-1 victory versus Weber State (Sept. 16).
Gankema also was involved in the UCSB attack as she took four shots on the week, three of those on frame.
The native of Irvine, Calif., was one of only four defenders selected nationwide by Soccer America on the prestigious Team of the Week list.
