SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB women's soccer team made its 2013 debut with a 1-1 draw in an exhibition match against Westmont at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Gauchos wasted no time in finding the back of the net at just the 1:37 mark. On the play, Madison Beckley delivered the top-drawer goal after breaking into the box with one defender to beat. The junior forward was able to squeeze the ball in between goalkeeper Lindsey Smith and the cross bar for the 1-0 Gaucho lead.
UCSB dominated possession for the majority of the match, but Westmont saw their offensive opportunities come midway through the first half.
The Warriors dialed in the equalizer at the 25th minute on a corner kick from Courtney Stonesifer. Delivering from the right corner, she bent the ball into the goal by herself for the equalizer. Westmont tried to carry that moment to a first half advantage, but the Gauchos' defense proved too much, keeping the score 1-1 at halftime.
The teams battled through a scoreless second half with UCSB primarily holding possession.
The Gauchos will officially kick off the 2013 season this Friday when they host Fresno State at Harder Stadium at 7:00pm. Be there to witness the exciting start to the new season. You can get your tickets online or by calling the Ticketing Office at 805-893-UCSB (8272).
