SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon at Harder Stadium, it took the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team until the second half to warm-up, but by then, Long Beach State had already scored two goals en route to a 2-1 Big West Conference win.
The Gauchos (7-5-1 overall, 1-1 in the Big West) were outshot 9-2 in by the 49ers (7-5-0 overall, 1-1 in the Big West) in the first 45 minutes of play. The only two shots they could muster were both on-goal, but relatively harmless. Long Beach, on the other hand, had seven on-frame shots in the first half, forcing goalkeeper Beth Ritter to make five saves.
Long Beach took a 1-0 lead at the 30:57 mark when Mimi Akaogi took a shot from point blank range on the right side. The initial shot was blocked by goalkeeper Beth Ritter, but Jessika Oseguera scored her first goal of the year on the scramble for the rebound.
Less than seven minutes after breaking the scoreless tie, the 49ers made it 2-0 on an outstanding individual effort by Taylor Nelson who dribbled through traffic above the penalty box. After freeing herself from the defense, Nelson lined a shot from 18 yards out that eluded a leaping Ritter.
UCSB cut the lead in half in the 55th minute when Angelisa Cortez picked up a loose ball on the left side of the goal box and lifted a shot into the upper right part of the goal.
In all, Santa Barbara was outshot 16-4, including 8-4 in shots on-goal. The 49ers also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The loss was just UCSB's second of the season at home.
The Gauchos will hit the road next weekend. They will play at Hawaii on Thursday, Oct. 10 and then at Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Oct. 13. They return home on Friday, Oct. 18 to host UC Riverside in a 7:00 p.m. match at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
