Gauchos Hit The Road For Week Two Of Big West Play
The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team will travel for the second weekend of Big West Conference play as it plays at Hawai'i on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Oct. 13.  Because of the additional travel involved to play the Rainbow Wahine, the usual Friday-Sunday scheduling pattern is scrapped for this weekend with the Gauchos instead playing on Thursday-Sunday.

The UCSB Record
UCSB enters the weekend with an overall record of 7-5-1 and a Big West record of 1-1.  The Gauchos, who are tied for No. 7 in the NSCAA West Regional rankings, split their first two conference games last weekend, defeating UC Irvine (1-0) and then losing to Long Beach State (2-1). The seven wins are two more than Santa Barbara registered all of last year.

You Will Get Nothing…And Like It!
UCSB has seven victories in 2013 and all seven have come by way of shutout.  Never, in school history have the Gauchos won all of their games with shutouts.  In the seven wins, they have outscored their opponents 12-0

Madison's Avenue Leads To Goals
Junior Madison Beckley scored the game-winning goal in the Gauchos' goal in the team's 1-0 win over visiting UC Irvine.  It was the second straight game in which Beckley scored a goal and it gave her a team-leading five on the year.  Beckley has played in 12 of the team's 13 games and has a goal or an assist in seven of her appearances.  She also paces the team with 12 points.  The four goals ranks in a tie for third in the Big West Conference and the 12 points ties her for second.

Francis Gets Involved
Sophomore Savannah Francis missed most of the 2012 season because of injuries and she wasn't too involved early in the 2013 season.  But as the year has progressed, Francis has started to play her way into key minutes.  On Oct. 4, in UCSB's 1-0 win over UC Irvine, she had a perfect pass across the front of the goal that resulted in a game-winning header by Madison Beckley.  The goal came in the closing minutes and proved decisive.  It was the second assist in as many matches for the La Mirada, Calif. Native. She also assisted on a Beckley goal in a 2-1 loss to 19th-ranked Denver.

Gauchos Get Defensive
UCSB has outscored its opponents this season by an 18-12 count and with the exception of a 4-3 loss at Southern Utah, the Gauchos have been very solid defensively.  In the other 12 games, they allowed two goals three times, one goal once and they have recorded seven shutouts. In fact UCSB's streak of five consecutive shutouts (games 5-9) was the third longest in program history and the longest since 1989. The Gauchos had six-game shutout strings in 1987 and 1989. In addition to goalkeeper Beth Ritter, Santa Barbara's defense is led by Taylor Gehring, Paige and Lindsay Gankema, Sydney Fuertes, and midfielder Kelly McGrath and Miranda Cornejo

Ritter's Big West Leadership Role
Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Ritter leads the Big West Conference in goals against average at 0.68. She also leads the league with six shutouts and most recently she blanked UC Irvine 1-0 in the Gauchos' conference opener. Also, Ritter ranks second in the league in save percentage at .829. Not bad for a player who wasn't expected to start when the season. A season-ending injury to Makenna Henry, however, changed expectations and Ritter has responded. At one she had five consecutive shutouts, the longest stretch by a UCSB goalkeeper since Jan Urich registered six in a row in 1989.

The Stumpf File
Paul Stumpf is in his 15th season as the head coach of the UCSB women's program.  He is the school's all-time leader in coaching victories with 135.  Overall, Stumpf's career record is 135-123-34.
