SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Erica Seidman scored the second goal of her career in the eighth minute and Jacqui Simon added a goal early in the second half as UC Santa Barbara blanked visiting Cal State Northridge 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Friday night. It was the season-opener for both teams.

Seidman, a senior midfielder, was stationed directly in front of Matador goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo when she took a perfect crossing pass from Kylie McDonald. With her back to Jacobo, Seidman redirected the ball into the right corner of goal giving the Gauchos a 1-0 lead at the 7:06 mark. It was the first goal of her career.

Simon, also a senior midfielder, made it 2-0 at 56:07 when she took a feed from junior forward Alissa Sanchez above the top of the box. The two-time First Team All-Big West honoree cracked a powerful shot from about 25 yards out and into the upper right corner of the goal.

"It feels great," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "It couldn't have gone any better than that. We got two quality goals from two of our top senior players. I thought it was a pretty dominant game."

Stumpf was also happy to get off to a good start on Harder Stadium's newly installed turf.

"That is a very good way to christen a beautiful new playing surface," he said.

The Gauchos outshot their opponents 14-5, including 8-1 in shots on goal. They also had nine corner kicks to the Matadors' two, neither of which came in the second half. UCSB goalkeeper Makenna Henry, making her debut, needed just one save to record her first collegiate win. The only time that Northridge really threatened was midway through the first half when Farryn Townley's shot in the 13th minute hit the crossbar.

UCSB will host Cal State Bakersfield in a 5:00 p.m. match at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Sunday, August 22.
