SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Kathleen Prieto (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster HS) scored off of a rebound in the third minute of overtime on Sunday to lift UC Santa Barbara to is fourth consecutive win, 1-0 over George Washington.
The Gauchos dominated the match, outshooting George Washington 26-3, but the game was scoreless at the end of regulation.
Just over two minutes into the first extra period, freshman forward Genelle Ives (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS) took a ball on the right side of the penalty box, beat a pair of defenders and slid a pass into the crease. Junior forward Allie Kueny (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) one-timed a shot at the goal but Colonial goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci made the save. Prieto, who was in front of the goal, got to the rebound and shoved a shot just inside the left post at the 92:14 mark.
UCSB had numerous opportunities to score, the best of which came midway through the second half. Junior forward Chandi Bickford, playing in her first match of the year after recovering from a sprained knee, beat a pair of defenders, and Paolucci, but her shot hit the left post and was cleared by a George Washington defender.
In addition to the vast disparity in shots, the Gauchos also had 15 corner kicks to the Colonials two.
Paolucci, GWU's senior goalkeeper, kept her team in the match with nine saves. Colonial defenders also recorded three team saves. On the flipside, UCSB freshman goalkeeper Kelly Soler (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) did not need a save to record the first win, and first shutout of her career. The Gauchos did get one team save in the first half when sophomore defender Kandice Mclaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) stopped a shot and cleared a ball off of the line on a GWU attack. UCSB's defenders played one of their best matches of the year. In addition to McLaughlin, the Gauchos got outstanding play from senior Katie Cooper (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS), sophomore Katrina Wright (Vancouver, B.C./Handsworth HS) and sophomore Katie Dwyer (Orcutt, Calif./Righetti HS).
The win extends UCSB's season-long winning streak to four straight games and it improves the team's overall record to 5-3. GWU, which defeated San Diego State on Friday night, drops to 3-4 on the season.
The Gauchos return to action next weekend when they travel to Arizona for games at Arizona State (Fri., Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.) and the University of Arizona (Sun., Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m.). UCSB returns home on Wed., Sept. 28, when it hosts nationally-ranked UCLA in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
