First Half Goal Holds Up as Davidson Edges UCSB, 1-0

Sept. 22, 2006

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Sophomore forward Melanee Smith scored off of a rebound in the box at the 22:03 mark to lead Davidson to a 1-0 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday night.

At first it looked as though the Gauchos (2-3-3) would strike early as they got off three shots in the first three minutes of the contest, while also getting three of their four first-half corner kicks in the first five minutes of play. But, Davidson's (4-3-0) defense hung tight and started to gain back some of the momentum.

Davidson senior Heidi Wilbrandt started the momentum change when she almost got her first goal of the season with a direct kick on goal, but she was denied by UCSB freshman goalie Tammy Lenham. Wilbrandt broke free from her defender on the left side near the post and took a shot, but Lenham was right there to scoop the ball up.

Smith then made sure this time Lenham would not deny the Wildcats their first score of the contest. Junior Nancy Haskell set the goal up by twice sending a cross into the box, with the second cross finding Smith. The sophomore took a shot, but had it blocked by Lenham, who was not able to secure the ball, allowing Smith to find the rebound and blast it in from the middle of the box.

The Gauchos, who pressured the Davidson defense in the latter part of the second stanza, had one very good chance of forcing overtime with just under three minutes remaining when they worked the ball down to the Wildcat box. After UCSB passed the ball around in the box, senior forward Allie Kueny gathered it in and tried to hit a high shot over Bevin English's head, but the junior reached high and stretched her arms out, knocking the ball over the goal for a one of her best saves of the night.

Davidson outshot the Gauchos 11-8, but UCSB compiled six corner kicks to the Wildcats two.

English came up with a game-high five saves for Davidson while Lenham earned four saves for the Gauchos.

UCSB, which drops to 2-3-3 on the year, will remain in the south when it travels to Central Florida on Sunday for a 10:00 a.m. (PST) match.
