UCSB Scores First But Can't Hang-On in 2-1 Loss to Central Florida
Sept. 24, 2006
ORLANDO, Fla. - An unassisted goal by freshman Becca Thomas in the 77th minute gave the UCF women's soccer team the 2-1 edge over UC Santa Barbara at the UCF Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams earn scoring chances, the Gauchos found the back of the net in the 60th minute. Sophomore Genelle Ives fed the ball to senior Chandi Bickford in the box. Bickford scored low to the left side of UCF junior goalkeeper Jennifer Manis.
Just 30 seconds later, the Golden Knights tied the game as freshman Sarah de Leon corralled the ball 20 yards out and sent a shot over UCSB junior keeper Katie Wright.
Both squads continued to battle and earn opportunities, but it was Thomas who netted the game-winner from 25 yards.
The Golden Knights outshot the Gauchos by an 11-9 margin during the game and also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Manis stopped four shots, including two in the second half, while Wright made three total saves.
The loss drops UCSB to 2-4-3 on the season. UCF improves to 4-4-1.
The Gauchos return to action on Friday, Sept. 29 when they host nationally-ranked Gonzaga in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
