Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara used a three goal outburst during a 13 minute span midway through the second half on Sunday to blow open a close match and blank visiting UC Riverside, 4-0, in Big West Conference women's soccer action.

The Gauchos (5-5-2 overall, 2-0 in the Big West) took a 1-0 lead over the Highlanders (7-5-0 overall, 1-1 in the Big West) midway through the first half. At the 26:20 mark, freshman forward Brooke Salyer brought a ball in from the left sideline just about even with the top of the penalty box. Salyer centered a pass to the top of the box where another freshman forward, Jacqui Simon, collected it and hooked a powerful shot to the lower left side of the goal. The score was Simon's second of the year.

UCR almost scored the equalizer in the opening minute of the second half when Tessa Lennala dribbled into the box and drove a shot past the Gaucho defense and goalkeeper Katie Wright. Lennala's shot, however, hit the left goalpost and the score remained tied.

After weathering the Highlander threat the teams played even for about seven minutes, but in the 54th minute, the UCSB onslaught began.

At 53:45, senior defender Katrina Wright took a free kick from 40 yards out near the left sideline. She lofted the ball towards the left side of the penalty box where junior forward Michelle Russell collected it shoved a pass through traffic to freshman forward Kailyn Kugler. Kugler dribbled left to right and placed a shot just inside the right post to make it 2-0 Gauchos. It was Kugler's fourth goal of the season.

Kugler's fifth goal of the season wasn't far behind.

At the 65:41 mark, senior Romy Barber carried the ball along the right side line and hit Kugler with a perfect pass near the right side of the penalty box. Kugler went one-on-one with Riverside goalkeeper Deanna Borgelt and scored her second goal of the match, third on the weekend and fifth on the season.

Santa Barbara capped the scoring just 15 seconds later, at 65:56, as Russell rebounded a shot by freshman, Jessie Edmonds, and put the ball inside the right post to give her team a 4-0 lead, which is how the score remained.

As they were on Friday when they blanked Cal State Fullerton 2-0 and outshot the Titans 21-8, the Gauchos were again dominant on Sunday against UCR. UCSB outshot the Highlanders 20-5 to post its second straight win. The four goals were a season-high. The shutout was the team's fifth of the season and it was split between Wright and freshman Cassi Franklin. The Gauchos are unbeaten in their last five home matches and are 4-1-2 at home this season.

Santa Barbara returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Pepperdine in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match at Harder Stadium.
