SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - When senior forward Kailyn Kugler missed two games at the end of September, UC Santa Barbara went scoreless in both, a span of 200 minutes.

On Friday night, Kugler, playing in her third game since returning from a strained quad muscle, scored her fourth of the season to lead UCSB (6-5-2 overall, 2-1-0 in the Big West) past Cal State Northridge (7-6-0 overall, 2-1-0 in the Big West) in a Big West Conference game, 1-0.

The game was scoreless through the first 31 minutes. In the 32nd minute, midfielder Jacqui Simon slid a pass through the penalty box to forward Erin Ortega. Ortega one-timed a shot that was blocked by Matador goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo but Kugler was right there to tuck the ball into the left hand side of the goal.

"I think what Kugler does is definitely bring us that composure with her maturity," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "She definitely makes a difference."

Kugler actually had a chance to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead midway through the second half when she took a through ball, beat Jacobo and then hit the right post.

Defensively, UCSB was solid. Freshman goalkeeper Makenna Henry needed just two saves to register her fifth shutout of the season. Overall, Northridge had just eight shots while the Gauchos had 15, eight of which were on goal. Jacobo had seven saves to keep the game close.

"After the first 10 minutes, I thought we did a really good job of possessing," Stumpf began, "and playing to the system and really playing it well.

"Any time you get a conference win at home against a first-place team is huge," Stumpf said. "So that puts us over another team in the head-to-head which makes me generally very pleased."

Kugler's goal was the 26th over her career and it moved her past former Gauchos All-American Lisa Busch and into eighth-place on UCSB's all-time list.

The Gauchos return home to host 17th-ranked UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
