UCSB Drops First Big West Road Match of the Season, 2-1 at UC Irvine
Oct. 14, 2007
IRVINE, Calif. - Playing its first conference road match of the season, the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team had its eight-match Big West unbeaten streak snapped in a 2-1 loss at UC Irvine.
The Anteaters, who had not won a Big West match since since October of 2005, wasted little time getting on the board Sunday night. In the eighth minute senior Makenzie Beahm passed the ball up the field to senior Kim Horn who flicked the ball on to freshman Tanya Taylor who beat Gaucho goalkeeper Katie Wright at the 7:25 mark to give her team a 1-0 lead.
UCSB tied the score in the final moments of the first half as freshman forward Kailyn Kugler struck for her team-leading sixth goal of the season when she converted after a perfect pass from fellow freshman forward Jacqui Simon at 44:54.
UCI responded in the first minute of the second half. Senior Frankee Kelly found Taylor again and Taylor put the ball away for her second goal of the night at the 45:46 mark.
The teams threatened on a number of occasions the rest of the way, but neither could hit paydirt and the Anteaters held on for the 2-1 win.
Wright had a pair of saves for the Gauchos (5-7-2, 2-1 in the Big West) and freshman goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere had six for Irvine (7-5-1, 1-1 in the Big west).
UCSB will play its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 17, when it travels north to take on traditional national power Santa Clara in a 7:00 p.m. match. The Gauchos will return to Big West play at home on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Cal Poly in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
