SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - At the outset of their final home match as UC Santa Barbara women's soccer players, seniors Stacy Myrick and Jessie Edmonds had combined for two career assists. By the end of Thursday's non-conference contest against Seattle University, the duo had combined for a game-winning goal.
In its final home appearance of the 2010 season, UCSB (7-8-2) defeated the Redhawks (9-4-1), 1-0, on Myrick's goal in the 75th minute of play. It was her first career goal. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Gauchos and a six-game unbeaten string for Seattle.
With the game scoreless entering the final 15 minutes of regulation, senior Jacqui Simon, who was appearing in her school record 81st game as a Gaucho, took the ball inside the upper-left portion of the penalty box. She shoved a right-footed pass to Edmonds who was near the left corner of the box. Edmonds pounded a cross to the right of the goal, finding a streaking Myrick who headed the ball past Seattle goalkeeper Madison Goverde for the only goal of the game.
Santa Barbara had other solid opportunities. The most dangerous of the opportunities came just minutes before Edmonds and Myrick combined on the decisive score, senior forward Kylie McDonald hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from about 12 yards straight out.
The Gauchos, who still harbor some hope for a berth in the Big West Tournament, will return to league action on Sunday, Oct. 24 when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 5:00 p.m. game at Titan Field. UCSB currently sits in fifth-place in league and would likely have to win its final two games to even have an opportunity to take part in the league tournament.
UCSB will host the 2010 Men's NCAA College Cup on December 10 and 12. Tickets remain available. To purchase tickets, please call (805) 893-UCSB, visit the Ticket Office located inside the Intercollegiate Athletics building on campus or buy online by clicking herehere >.
