SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Soccer player Genelle Ives was selected UCSBgauchos.com Female Athlete of the Year in an online vote that wrapped-up Monday. Ives received 63 of the 229 votes cast in the balloting, 27.5%. Swimmer Katy Freeman (18.3%) and basketball player Lauren Pedersen (15.7%) finished second and third respectively.
A junior from Dana Hills, Calif., Ives led the Gauchos to the Big West Tournament title and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1991. She was named Big West Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big West after scoring nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. It was the third time Ives was selected All-Big West.
Freeman, who received 42 votes, earned All-American status with an eighth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. Her time of 2:09.12 in the event was both a UCSB record and a new Big West mark.
Pedersen received 36 votes. She was named Big West Tournament MVP after leading the Gauchos to their second straight title and 13th overall. UCSB also received its 13th NCAA Tournament berth. During the regular season, Pedersen, a First Team All-Big West choice, paced the team in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played. She was second in rebounding.
Softball player Christine Ramos (25 votes) and cross country and track star Danielle Domenichelli (20 votes) rounded out the top-5 in the balloting.
