The Blue-Green Rivalry Series
The athletics rivalry between UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly has
grown in recent years, and now the schools are putting their
competition to good use through the Blue-Green Rivalry.
As the Gauchos and Mustangs battle it out on the field, diamond, court and in the pool, the Big West rivals will seek to make fans and students aware of their campuses' recycling and sustainability efforts. The eco-slant to the rivalry fits the colors of sustainability (blue and green) as well as those of UCSB (blue) and Cal Poly (green).
The Blue-Green Rivalry is based on the results of the 16 common sports that the schools compete in and winner will be decided prior to the end of each school year.
The creative angle of using games to promote the campuses' sustainability and recycling efforts is the first of its kind in college athletics. To learn more about sustainability efforts at UCSB, click here.
• The Gaucho Record
UCSB enters the final weekend of the regular season with an
overall record of 8-8-2 and a Big West record of 3-4-0. Last
weekend, the Gauchos put together back-to-back wins for the first
time since opening the year with a 3-0 record. UCSB defeated
Seattle University in non-conference game by a 1-0 score and then,
on Sunday, shutout Cal State Fullerton, 2-0.
• UCSB Enters Final Weekend Needing Help To Advance
To Big West Tournament
The Gauchos will need some significant help if they are to secure
an opportunity to defend their Big West Tournament championships of
2008 and 2009. Santa Barbara, with just a Friday night game at Cal
Poly remaining on the schedule, needs to win. That's a given. The
Gauchos also need Cal State Fullerton to win at Cal State
Northridge on Thursday night and then lose at first-place UC Irvine
on Sunday afternoon. If those things happen, UCSB, Cal State
Fullerton and Cal State Northridge would have 12 points apiece and
would be tied for the fourth and final spot in the tournament. The
Gauchos are a perfect 2-0 against the Titans and Matadors, thus
winning the tiebreaker.
• Gauchos Snap Out Of Offensive Funk
It was a modest accomplishment, but when the Gauchos scored two
goals in a 2-0 win at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, it was the
first time they had scored more than one goal in a game since they
tallied two at UC Riverside on Oct. 1. If you add the game-winning
goal scored in the 75th minute on Oct. 21 against Seattle, UCSB has
scored three goals in its last 105 minutes, a small step in the
right direction.
• Myrick Goes Out In Style
Talk about timing. Senior Stacy Myrick,
playing the final home game of her career, scored a goal in the
75th minute, giving UCSB a 1-0 win over Seattle on Oct. 21. The
goal was a big one on a couple of fronts. First of all, it helped
the Gauchos end a three-game losing streak and secondly, it was the
first goal of Myrick's career. In addition, the assists on the goal
were credited to two more seniors, Jacqui Simon and Jessie
Edmonds. For Edmonds, it was just the second assist of her
four-year career.
• Kugler Remains On A Roll
Senior forward Kailyn Kugler
scored one goal and and assisted on the other in the Gauchos' 2-0
win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. Kugler now has seven goals
and four assists for a team-leading 18 points. She has either
scored or assisted on 10 of the team's last 13 goals over a span of
12 games. Kugler missed two of the 10 games with a an injured leg
and UCSB was shutout in both. In all, the San Clemente, Calif.,
native now has 29 goals, tied for sixth in school history, and 73
career points, ninth all-time.
• Simon Enters The Record Book
When senior midfielder Jacqui Simon played
her final home game played her final career home game on Oct. 21,
it was her 81st game as a member of the Gauchos, a new school
record. Simon has now played in 82 career games, two more than
current teammates Kailyn Kugler and
Julia
Speace, and former UCSB great, Jennifer
Borcich. Simon also assisted on a goal in each of the last two
Gaucho games. She now has six assists on teh season and 20 in her
career, ninth all-time. A four-year starter and two-time First Team
All-Big West player, Simon has 13 goals and 21 assists for a total
of 47 career points, 14th all-time.
• On The Stumpf
Paul Stumpf
is in his 12th season as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara. He has
a record of 116-94-29. His 112 wins are the most in school history.
On Sept. 9, 2009 he became the school's all-time leader in coaching
with as the Gauchos defeated William and Mary, 2-0. In 2009, Stumpf
guided UCSB to its second straight Big West Tournament title, and
second NCAA Tournament. Prior to 2008, the Gauchos had not been to
the tourney since 1991. 2008 also marked the fifth time that Stumpf
has guided the Gauchos to at least 10 wins. He has led the program
to records of .500 or better in seven of the last 10 seasons,
including, at one point, four straight seasons of 10 or more
victories, the first time the program had accomplished that feat
since 1988-91. In 1999, Stumpf's first season as the head coach at
UCSB, he took a team that was picked to finish last in the
conference, and instead posted an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-4
mark in the Big West. Following the season, he was chosen as the
Big West's Coach of the Year. On two occasions, Stumpf's UCSB teams
have won the Big West regular season title.
