SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team, which won its second straight Big West Tournament championship on Sunday afternoon at Cal Poly, will travel to Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., Thursday, to play BYU in an NCAA Tournament first round match. Thursday's kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. The second round will be played on Saturday.
The Gauchos, who battled the Mustangs to a 1-1 tie before winning a penalty kick shootout, are making their ninth appearance in the tournament. It will mark the first time that the program has advanced to the postseason in back-to-back years since it went to three in a row from 1989-91.
"BYU has an outstanding program," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "They have a lot of experience in the postseason, but getting them on a neutral field should make things interesting."
The Cougars, who were upset by San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, enter the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. BYU will bring with it a 17-3-2 record into Thursday's game.
It was a rollercoaster season for UCSB. The Gauchos, picked to win the Big West by the league's coaches, opened the season with a 3-7-1 record but went 6-2-2 over their final 10 games to finish the regular season at 9-9-3.
UCSB also traveled to Stanford for the NCAA Tournament in 2008 where it lost a 2-0 decision to the host Cardinal.
Ticket information will be available on Tuesday.
