TEMPE, Ariz. – UC Santa Barbara (1-5) ended up on the wrong side of a complete team effort by No. 9 Stanford (4-1) on Sunday in its final game of the Kajikawa Classic. The Cardinal defeated the Gauchos, 11-0, in a five-inning mercy rule win.
Stanford pitchers Teagan Gerhart and Nyree White combined for a perfect game. Gerhart started the game and tossed 2.2 scoreless, hitless innings with four strikeouts. White entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the third and sealed up the perfect game.
The Cardinal opened the contest with a three-run first inning. Stanford took advantage of a pair of errors by the Gauchos. Leadoff hitter Sarah Hassman reached on a pitcher error and was sent home on a double to left center field by Hanna Winter. She advanced to third on another UCSB miscue in center field. A pitch hit Ashley Hansen and Jenna Rich drew a walk, loading the bases. A ground out by Danielle Miller sent Winter home and Hansen scored on a sacrifice fly by Caitlyn Pura.
Stanford added a couple more in the top of the second when Hansen hit a two-run homer that scored Hassman.
The third inning saw the Cardinal tack on two more to push the lead to 7-0. Maya Burns and Jenna Becerra singled and doubled, respectively, to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Hassman drew a walk to load the bases and then Winter hit a single through the right side, sending both Burns and Becerra across home plate.
In the fifth inning, Stanford loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, infield single and intentional walk. With two outs, Rich hit an RBI single to score Wells. The Cardinal added three more runs, including a pair off a single by Tegan Schmidt.
Freshman Shelby Wisdom (1-2) was credited with the loss after tossing 4.1 innings and allowing eight runs, six earned, on six hits. She walked five and struck out two. Andriana Collins pitched the final 0.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits while walking two.
