SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman pitcher Shelby Wisdom was honored with her second Big West Pitcher of the Week honor after a nearly flawless weekend in the circle.
The Elk Grove, Calif. native pitched every inning of the Gauchos' three-game series against Cal State Northridge this weekend. In the first game of the series, Wisdom tossed her first career no-no. In the complete game gem, she did not allow any walks and struck out nine batters, surpassing the school record for single season strikeouts.
In game two, she pitched another seven shutout innings and allowed five hits, a walk and struck out five. The shutout marked her third straight after she blanked Cal Poly in the series finale with the Mustangs.
The final game of the season, she kept the Gauchos in contention for the Big West title by limiting the Matadors to one run on three hits. She fanned six in the win. Her weekend ERA was 0.33 and she limited the UCSB opposition to a .113 batting average.
The freshman also led the team offensively, batting a team-best .556 (5-for-9) for the weekend with a home run, two RBI, two sacrifice hits and a .889 slugging percentage.
The Big West honor was not Wisdom's only this week. The pitcher was named as the Big West's Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness. Senior catcher Lainey DePompa was named to the Second Team along with junior shortstop Keilani Jennings.
The conference will release its All-Big West picks later this week.
