• On the Road Again
After opening their Big West schedule with a 1-2 series loss to Cal State Fullerton, the UCSB softball team will hit the road this weekend to visit St. Mary's and Pacific. UCSB's matchup with the Gaels will be a nonconference stop on Wednesday during their road swing. The Gauchos will be back in Big West action this weekend with a three-game series against the Tigers.
• For The Record
UCSB enters this week with a 20-10 record, the second best overall mark in the Big West. However, with a 1-2 conference record, the Gauchos are fifth in the Big West standings.
• Batter Up!
Entering the second week of the Big West season, UCSB ranks second in the conference in both team batting average (.279) and third in hits (223). Long Beach State ranks number one in both categories with a .281 batting average and 258 hits.
• Hit Parade
While UCSB is second in the conference as a team, the Gauchos have three players rank among the top-ten hitters in the Big West: Arianna Palomares, Jessica Soria, and Shelby Wisdom. Long Beach State is the only other team to have that many players in the top-ten. Palomares leads the team with a .365 batting average, which ranks third in the Big West. Soria is tied for sixth on the list with a .337 mark, while broke her way back on the list in ninth with a .327 average.
• Offensive Wisdom
In addition to being the Gauchos' ace, Shelby Wisdom has also been improving her play at the plate. She is currently tied for most RBIs in the conference with 28, and is third in the conference with 66 at bats. Her eight doubles tie her with Arianna Palmores for most on the squad and fourth most in the Big West. The sophomore is also second on the Gauchos with 32 hits and a .551 slugging percentage. Wisdom has also garnered the most bases on the team with 54, which places her in seventh place in the Big West.
• Palomares at the Plate
Freshman Arianna Palomares has made an immediate impact at UCSB by quickly becoming one of the top batters in the conference. In addition to having the third best batting average in the Big West, she is also tied with teammate Jessica Soria for the second most hits in the conference with 35. Her two triples have her in a nine-way tie for the most among conference players.
• Speedy Soria
As a senior, Jessica Soria has led UCSB by being one of the most productive leadoff batters in the Big West. Soria is tied for the lead in the Big West with 28 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. What's more impressive is that she has only been caught stealing twice. Soria is in a three-way tie for the second most hits in the conference (35) along with her teammate Arianna Palomares.
• Big Swinging Senior
Gaucho senior Keilani Jennings sports the biggest bat on the UCSB lineup. UCSB's starting shortstop leads the team with a .576 slugging percentage and six homeruns. Her 23 RBIs also rank fourth in the Big West. Jennings' power has earned her the respect of opposing pitchers as she has been walked 17 times, tied for third most in the conference.
• In the Circle
Shelby Wisdom has been the Gauchos go-to pitcher this season and has racked up the second most wins in the Big West with 11 and is fifth in ERA with a 2.39 mark. She is also fifth in the conference with 93 strikeouts through 108.1 innings of work. Of those punch outs, 26 of them have caught the batter looking, which is the fourth most in the Big West. Though Alex Pingree is only a freshman, she already has made an impact in UCSB's pitching rotation. She is sixth in the conference in ERA (2.45) and ninth in opposing batting average (.256). The freshman is also tied for first among Big West pitchers in earned runs allowed with 16 and is also tied for third in hits allowed with 46. As a collective pitching staff, the Gauchos have garnered a total of 20 wins, tying them with Long Beach State for second in the conference rankings.
• The Galicinao File
Head coach Brie Galicinao, who is now in her sixth season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, has coached the Gauchos to a 128-140 cumulative record for a .478 winning percentage, the second best since the softball program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player of the Year accolades, two Big West Freshmen Pitchers of the Year and 27 All-Big West Conference selections. Last season, she was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the second time; she was named Co-Coach of the Year in 2008, her first season at the helm of the program.
