Gauchos Edge Long Beach State in Final Game of Series, 2-1
LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara ended a three-game skid and avoided a series sweep with a 2-1 victory against Long Beach State (30-19, 12-6) on Sunday afternoon. With their first win at Long Beach State since May 11th, 2007, the Gauchos improve their record to 26-19 overall and 7-8 in conference.
Shelby Wisdom led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double while compiling a complete game in the circle and held Long Beach State to one run on four hits. Wisdom added two strikeouts to give her 102 on the season and her record improves to 14-12.
UCSB wasted no time putting hits on the board in their fourth straight game on the road. In the top of the first, Kathryn Pilpil hit a one-out single to left field. Wisdom would then double to advance Pilpil to third. Arianna Palomares drew a walk to load the bases however Long Beach State would end the rally.
The Gauchos' bats wouldn't stay quiet for long and with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Lauren Boser hit a home-run to give UCSB a 1-0 lead. For Boser it's her second homer of the year and gives her 13 RBI's.
After shutting down 10 straight Long Beach hitters, Wisdom gave up a double and a single in the seventh bringing the score to 2-1. However, Wisdom would avoid the threat after getting the last batter to pop out to shortstop.
The Gauchos compiled six hits in the game and hit for the team cycle. Soria, Pilpil, and Wisdom hit singles. Wisdom added a double, Reichner had a triple, and Boser added the homerun.
UCSB will stay on the road for a game at UCLA this Wednesday at 3pm before heading home for a series with Cal State Northridge.
