SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On the final day of the second Gaucho Classic, UC Santa Barbara (18-6) came up short for the first time in their last eight games, losing to Dartmouth (6-8) 9-2. The Gauchos had won their previous three games in the Classic.
Starting in the circle for UCSB was Shelby Wisdom (7-5), looking to go 3-0 in the weekend tournament. Unfortunately, after a strong first few innings and two strikeouts, Wisdom began to struggle and the Big Green took the lead for good.
The Gauchos took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Kristen Clark led off with a ringing inside the park home run down the right field line, showing off her blazing speed to beat the relay throw home. Clark was the only Gaucho to collects two hits in the game, adding a single later on.
After Dartmouth responded with two runs of their own in the second, UCSB used a two out rally in the bottom half to tie up the game. Emily Brucelas began with a single to right field, and Stacy Cavazos followed with a double down the left field line to drive her in. Cavazos was thrown out at third attempting to advance on the throw.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth, where the Big Green used two singles and a triple to push across three runs. Dartmouth scored an additional four runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. The Big Green ended the tournament with four wins and just one loss.
The Gauchos resume play next Saturday, March 22nd, facing San Diego and San Jose State in the USD Tournament. First pitch is at 10:00 am Pacific Standard Time.
