Gauchos Open USD Tournament II With Two Victories

Shelby Wisdom (By Tony Mastres)

Game 1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara (19-6) made use of another dominant pitching performance by Shelby Wisdom and a two run bomb by Emily Brucelas to defeat USD (14-13) by a score of 2-1 in the first game of the USD Tournament II. The Gauchos have now won eight of their last nine games.

Wisdom spun yet another gem for what so far has been a brilliant season, collecting her ninth complete game and lowering her ERA to 2.85. In her seven innings Saturday, Wisdom gave up one run and four hits while striking out four San Diego batters. She also smacked two hits of her own.

The UCSB offensive attack was unable to put a lot of runs on the board but they were able to get all they needed in the top of the second inning. After a Lauren Boser single and a fielder's choice, Brucelas hit a two run homer to left field to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead. The home run is

Brucelas's third of the season, tied for first on the squad.
The Toreros struggled with the bat as well, with only one runner getting in scoring position other than Kylie Ordos with her solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. This comes as no surprise with Wisdom on the mound, as her WHIP for the year barely exceeds one.

The Gauchos threatened in the top of the first and sixth innings by putting runners in scoring position, but they failed to cash in both times. Wisdom singled in the first inning with Kristen Clark at second base, but the left fielder threw her out at home to keep the game scoreless at the time.

The game also had an unusual ending, as Wisdom was able to pickoff Danielle Mavridis at first for the final out.

Game 2

The Gauchos notched their 20th win of the season as they defeated the San Jose State Spartans (15-12) by a score of 5-4 in the second game of the USD Tournament II. Kristen Clark, MeShalon Moore and Emily Brucelas all collected two hits and an RBI to lead the way for UC Santa Barbara at the plate.

San Jose State began the game with an offensive spark of their own against starter Andriana Collins. With one out the Spartans loaded the bases after a base hit, an error and a walk. A follow up single drove in two runs to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
UCSB would get on the board with an RBI single by Brucelas to score Moore who singled to leadoff the inning.

The Gauchos put together a big third inning that got rolling when Clark who led off with a double to left center. After Shelby Wisdom reached on an error, back-to-back hits by Moore and Boser would give the Gauchos a 4-2 lead.

Two errors back-to-back cost the Gauchos another run in the top of the fourth inning to allow the Spartans to inch closer making it 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, UCSB added an insurance run that turned out to be vital in the victory. Brucelas led off the inning with a single through the left side and was brought home to score on a triple by Clark.

San Jose State would score once more in the top of the seventh but the Gauchos were able to hold on to secure the win 5-4.

Alex Pingree
(5-0) picked up the win pitching 3 2/3 innings while allowing three hits, and zero earned runs. Shelby Wisdom came in in the fifth inning and picked up her second save of the season, closing out the last three innings allowing one earned and three hits while striking out one for the Gauchos.

UCSB continues play in the USD Tournament II with another doubleheader when they take on San Diego and San Jose State once again.
