Corvallis, Ore. – In concluding its nonconference schedule, UC Santa Barbara was dealt an 8-1 loss at Oregon State.
The Gauchos' record falls to 21-15, as the team has dropped its past five games. Oregon State improves to 12-18 with the win.
In total, six of the Gauchos' starting nine recorded a hit against the Beavers. Kristen Clark led UCSB with two singles, while DeJanee Moore had the team's biggest hit of the day with RBI double. Clark has increased her league-leading hits total to 58, which is nine more than the next closest player.
In the circle, Shelby Wisdom (9-9) was credited with the loss after pitching five innings and allowing six earned runs, while nabbing three strikeouts. The senior breezed through the first two innings and only allowed one hit after facing seven batters.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first with a three-run third inning. Wisdom struck out the leadoff hitter, but Oregon State with four hits. After the team took its 3-0 lead, Wisdom got her team out of the inning by getting CJ Chirichigno to an infield pop fly.
After Oregon State jumped ahead 5-0, UCSB put up a run in the top of the sixth. Kathryn Pilpil led off the inning by reaching base from an error by Chirichigno at shortstop. Two batters later, MeShalon Moore connected on a double driven to left center, which sent Pilpil in for the score.
The Beavers added to their lead and found themselves on top 8-1 entering the seventh inning. In the circle, Amanda Najdek recorded two quick outs with a line out and a pop-up. Looking to keep the Gauchos alive, Stacy Cavazos dropped a single down the right field line. Following her was Clark who mimicked Cavazos's hit to right field for her second single of the game. Those runners wouldn't reach home plate, Najdek ended the game with a lineout.
UCSB returns home this Saturday to open their Big West home schedule with a doubleheader with Cal Poly starting at noon. The games will be the first and second of a three game series.
