SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Kathryn Pilpil was named the Big West Field Player of the Week after leading the Gauchos with a .600 batting average, five runs, and three RBI in the team's sweep of Cal State Northridge.
The senior went 6-for-10 over the weekend, which included four doubles. Those extra base knocks came during Saturday's doubleheader when Pilpil recorded two in each game. She is now second on the team with both a .297 season batting average and 28 total runs.
Pilpil was consistent in the batter's box through the entire series, as she picked up two hits in each contest. She finished the first game with two runs and two RBI, and added another run and RBI in game two. During the Gauchos' tight 8-7 series opening victory, Pilpil recorded what would be the game winning run with an RBI double she crushed to left center in the top of the sixth.
In UCSB's convincing 6-2 win on Sunday, the Oxnard, Calif. native led the team with a pair of runs in going 2-for-3 at the plate and also picked up her fourth steal of the season.
This is the first time Pilpil was named the conference Field Player of the Week. She is the second Gaucho to earn honor this season, as Kristen Clark received the award in March.
