SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara's battery combination of pitcher Shelby Wisdom and catcher MeShalon Moore each picked up weekly awards on Monday after a dominant 3-0 sweep at UC Riverside. Wisdom was named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Player of the Week, while Moore was selected as the Big West Field Player of the Week.
Wisdom pitched in all 21 innings at UC Riverside and finished the weekend with a microscopic 1.00 era. With her three victories, she tied Sandy Ortigies' program record of 62 career wins. Against Long Beach State this weekend, the junior will look to take sole ownership of the record that has belonged to Ortigies since 1987.
Wisdom showed sheer dominance in Saturday's doubleheader where she allowed only one earned run and one extra base hit through the two games. Her 3-0 victory in game two was her sixth complete game shutout of the season and her third in conference play.
MeShalon Moore received her first ever Big West Field Player of the Week award after leading UCSB in slugging percentage (.800) and runs (four) at UC Riverside. She picked up at least one run in every game and finished the series with a .600 batting average.
Highlighting the sophomore's weekend was her 4-4 performance in the series finale. Moore recorded a pair of doubles in the game and collected an RBI in both of them. She also accounted for two runs on Sunday in helping the Gauchos clinch the sweep with a 5-3 victory.
Wisdom, Moore, and the rest of the Gauchos will host Long Beach State this weekend in a series that will decide the 2014 Big West Champion. Both teams are tied for first in the league with a 13-5 record. If UCSB wins the series, it wins the conference crown.
The series opens with a doubleheader on Friday May 9 at 12 p.m. As a part of Walk Off Weekend, tickets for each game of the series will only be $5. To get your tickets today, visit the Ticketing Office at the Intercollegiate Athletics Building, call 805.893.UCSB (8272), or go online here.
