SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Jessica Johnston was named the Big West's Field Player of the Week for the second time in her career after helping lead the Gauchos to a pair of shutout victories over CSUN, it was announced on Monday.
The junior outfielder went 5-10 at the plate for a .500 batting average, either scoring or recording an RBI on six of UCSB's eight runs for the weekend. She finished with two runs and four RBIs to lead the Gauchos on offense.
Johnston finished the weekend with a team-leading ten total bases on her five hits - thanks to a triple and a home run - giving her a 1.000 slugging percentage. The home run was her fourth of the season, good for second on the team.
In UCSB's 3-0 series-opening win on Friday, Johnston got things started with an RBI in the bottom of the third, giving the Gauchos a lead they would not relinquish. She would eventually score a run of her own in the fifth, sealing the 3-0 victory.
In the second game of the weekend, Johnston recorded two hits for the second consecutive outing.
Finally, with UCSB holding on to a slim 1-0 lead in the third and final game, the Studio City, Calif. native blasted a three-run homer to right field, giving the Gauchos a four-run cushion that Northridge would fail to make a dent in. The win also gave UCSB a 2-1 series victory for the second straight week.
Johnston becomes the first Gaucho this season and the first since Sierra Altmeyer (May 9, 2016) to earn Big West Player of the Week honors. She currently ranks among the Big West's best in doubles (12, T-1st), hits (51, 3rd), batting average (.364, 3rd) and runs (28, 5th).
