SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A day after the conclusion of the regular season, junior pitcher Lena Mayer was named Big West Pitcher of the Week for her stellar play against Cal State Fullerton on Senior Day weekend.
Mayer had a perfect 2-0 mark against the Titans this past weekend, keeping the Big West champs scoreless for all 12 innings that she spent in the circle. She finished the weekend with one strikeout while giving up just seven hits and two walks.
In the series opener on Friday, Mayer entered the game following the second inning with UCSB trailing 3-0. She gave up just three hits and no runs the rest of the way, helping lead the defensive effort until Jessica Johnston's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth completed a stunning 4-3 comeback victory.
After UCSB narrowly dropped the second game 6-5, Mayer would return to the lineup as a starter in the regular season finale, pitching the first seven inning shutout of her career in a narrow 2-0 win. She gave up just four hits for the game – tying Fullerton's conference season-low for hits – and shutout the Titans for the first time in 18 games.
Mayer was the first Gaucho this season to earn conference pitcher of the week honors. She and the Gauchos will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Nevada at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the inaugural NISC Tournament.
