CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Playing in their final two road games before opening their home schedule with the four-day Gaucho Classic later this week, the UC Santa Barbara softball team was defeated by No. 17 Oregon, 6-1 and No. 4 Oklahoma, 8-0 on Sunday in their final games at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Gauchos (4-8) couldn't slow down Oregon (11-4) in their first game of the day, as the Ducks scored in four consecutive innings, highlighted by three runs in the third.
UCSB would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Sammy Fabian led off with a single up the middle, and she would eventually make her way to third as the Gauchos loaded the bases. Junior Genesis Ramirez would earn an RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice to bring Fabian home.
Closing things out against No. 4 Oklahoma, UCSB fell 8-0 in six innings.
The Sooners (13-2) did most of their damage in the opening inning, as their first four batters got on base. Oklahoma would finish the bottom of the first with four hits and five runs.
The Gaucho defense would tighten up a bit from there, but the Sooners added runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
UCSB was outhit 9-to-4, with hits coming from Cohen, Ramirez, Teah Thies and Carissa Felix. Junior pitcher Felisha Noriega gave up just one hit in two innings, while senior Veronika Gulvin tallied all three of UCSB's strikeouts.
After opening the year by playing 13 straight on the road, the Gauchos will open their home schedule this Thursday through Sunday with six games hosting the 2019 Gaucho Classic. UCSB's home openers will be in a doubleheader against Bowling Green on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
