SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday in the final game of the Big West opening weekend 3-1.
The Gauchos (6-28, 0-3) finished with four hits to Fullerton's (23-13, 3-0) seven. Sophomore shortstop Maci Fines paced UCSB with two hits on four at bats. Outfielders Sammy Fabian and Rayna Cohen also tallied hits.
The Titans put up one run in three consecutive innings, starting in the top of the second. Sam Kennedy opened the inning with a single down the right field line and went on to provide the opening run on a single from Kelsie Whitmore. In the top of the third, a Kennedy double would bring home Irie Siofele to make it 2-0.
Santa Barbara found a response in the bottom half of the third, loading the bases before taking a single out. Freshman Tyler Goldstein led off with a walk and Fines followed with a single through the left side. Fabian then knocked a single up the middle. Freshman catcher Teah Thies would take the first out of the inning for the Gauchos, hitting a sac fly into deep center field that brought Goldstein home to make it 2-1.
The Titan lead would double once more in the top of the fourth, courtesty of an Alexa Neil home run over the center field wall.
UCSB was held without a hit until the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore outfielder Rayna Cohen led off with a single through the right side. Two outs later, Goldstein earned a walk, advancing Cohen to second. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, a ground out on the final at bat would end the game.
Next weekend, the Gauchos will remain at home as they host UC Davis, beginning with another Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Campus Diamond.
