UCSB Goes the Distance, Picks Up Win Over San Diego State In Eight Innings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - With two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, senior Brittany Putich singled to left field driving in the lone run of the evening as UC Santa Barbara defeated host San Diego State in a 1-0 shutout at the Campbell/Cartier Classic. Freshman pitcher MeLinda Matsumoto picked up the win for the Gauchos during her collegiate debut.
With the win the Gaucho record is lifted to 2-1, they collected their first win of the season earlier in the day with an 8-6 victory over No. 23 Massachusetts. San Diego State's record falls to 1-1.
Putich led the Gauchos going 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI while Matsumoto pitched a complete eight innings allowing only six hits and fanning two batters.
San Diego State's Erin Floros and Kasey Mytinger each went 2-for-3 and pitcher Melissa Owens took the loss after allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Tied 0-0 at the bottom of the eighth with one out, junior catcher Ericka Hansen walked which was followed by a ball popped up to third base by Tisha Duran during the next at-bat. Tiffany Wright singled to the shortstop moving Hansen to second before Putich hit her game winning single bringing Hansen home.
The Gauchos face No. 10 Cal on Saturday at 7 p.m. as competition continues at the Cartier/Campbell Classic in San Diego, Calif.
