UCSB Posts Shutout Over Kansas

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (8-5) shut out Kansas (5-8) on the third day of the Cathedral City Classic at the Big League Dreams Park. The Gauchos posted a 4-0 win in their lone contest of the day on Saturday evening.
Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings. At the top of the fourth, freshman Amanda Ziegler led off with a double to center field. During the next at-bat, senior Jackie Conlin hit a sacrifice bunt advancing Ziegler to third base. An RBI double from junior Kelsey Anderson during the next play brought Ziegler home for the first run of the game.
The next inning, freshman Brooke Putich earned a walk and then advanced to second when senior Christine Ramos grounded out to the pitcher. Junior Jessica Ziegler's single to first base allowed Putich to reach third. Ziegler then stole second before senior Tiffany Wright hit a two-RBI single to right field putting UCSB ahead, 3-0.
At the top of the seventh, Putich hit a double down the leftfield line with one out. Jessica Ziegler followed with her second single of the game. A RBI single to left field from Wright brought home Putich for the final run of the game. The Gauchos retired the final three Jayhawk batters in order, sealing the 4-0 victory.
Wright led the team going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jessica Ziegler went 2-for-4 with a run and Putich went 2-for-2 with two runs, a double and a walk.
In the circle, Krista Cobb (4-2) picked up the win after tossing a complete game shutout. She allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven.
The Gauchos' will wrap-up action at the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday against No. 17 Nevada and Ohio State. UCSB will play the Wolfpack at noon and the Buckeyes at 2 p.m.
