TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team closed out Arizona State's Sun Devil/Wilson DeMarini Invitational with its second 4-0 victory of the weekend over Utah Valley State. Senior pitcher Jennifer Davis picked up her second win of the season after pitching the complete game shutout.
The Gauchos were originally scheduled to play Creighton on Sunday as their tournament closer, but Creighton was unable to make the tournament due to weather upsetting its travel plans.
With the win, UCSB improves to 13-5 on the season and is 5-4 in road games. Utah Valley State falls to 3-10 overall. UCSB had posted the same 4-0 score over Utah Valley State on Saturday morning. UCSB posted a 3-2 record at this weekend's tournament, which was highlighted by Friday evening's 8-7 upset of No. 2 ranked Arizona State.
Sunday's tournament closer marked the eighth shutout victory for the Gauchos this season, which matches the number of total shutout wins they posted throughout the entire 2006 season.
Davis is now 2-4 on the season after pitching a complete seven innings allowing no runs on two hits, walking four and striking out six. The Whittier, Calif. native currently holds a 0.78 ERA on the season.
Sophomore Christine Ramos led the Gauchos at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Junior Tisha Duran went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Davis, senior Brittany Putich and sophomore Tiffany Wright each went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Wright also provided a double in the win.
Cari Hamilton and Corie Jensen provided the Wolverine's only hits of the game. Jackie Roberts took the loss after pitching six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two and fanning four batters.
At the bottom of the first, Ramos got things started for the Gauchos at the top of the order with the first of two doubles. Senior Jessica Hejna advanced Ramos to third with a sacrifice bunt putting her in scoring position with only one out. Duran doubled to left field during the next at bat bringing Ramos home for the first Gaucho run of the day.
Davis took down the next six Wolverine batters in order before waking Jamie Tonis at the top of the fourth. Tonis advanced on a sac bunt and then a hit grounded out to Davis moved her to third. With the runner on third, Davis walked the next batter before earning the third out when Jensen grounded out to the catcher leaving two runners stranded.
The Gauchos got rolling again at the bottom of the fourth as Putich singled through the left side and then stole second. Junior Ericka Hansen reach on a Wolverine error, which brought Putich home bringing the Gaucho lead to 2-0.
In the next two innings, the Wolverines struggled to find any offense, as they were unable to produce any hits. At the top of the sixth, Wright doubled down the left field line at the top of the order. A single from Davis with one out then advanced Wright to third base. Davis stole second and Wright stole home bringing the score to 3-0. A double from Ramos to center field brought Davis home for the final run of the game.
UC Santa Barbara will compete in its fifth and final season-opening tournament next week when it heads to Northern California for the Stanford Classic. The Gauchos will face-off with San Diego State, No. 8/9 Stanford, Sacramento State and Loyola of Chicago. The tournament runs Mar. 9-11.
