March 5, 2010
TEMPE, Ariz. - After opening the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational with a 5-1 loss to Creighton (7-4) on Friday morning, UC Santa Barbara (6-11) bounced back in a big way, defeating Idaho State (3-5), 11-1, in a five-inning mercy rule victory to earn a split on the day.
A nine-run first inning propelled the Gauchos to the win over the Bengals. Jessica Ziegler led off with a walk and Brooke Putich followed with an infield single. Keilani Jennings was up next and laid down a sacrifice bunt before an error by the Idaho State second baseman allowed her to safely reach first base, loading the bases with no outs. Kelly McDonald came up to bat next and hit her second grand slam of the season to give the Gauchos a 4-0 advantage.
One out later, Priscilla Perez earned a walk prompting Idaho State to make a pitching change. The personnel change didn't slow the Gauchos down as Tiffany Corder and Jamie Adishian posted consecutive singles to once again load the bases. Ziegler drove Perez home with a single through the right side and during the next play, the Bengals committed another error allowing Corder to score. A double by Jennings to right field drove home three more runs to stretch the Gaucho lead to 9-0.
In the second, Lainey DePompa led off with a walk before Perez hit a homer over the right field fence, pushing the Gaucho advantage to 11-0.
A pair of doubles by Jessica Baca and Brittany Olsin led to the Bengals lone run of the game at the top of the fourth inning.
Krista Cobb (2-3) picked up the win after tossing five innings for the Gauchos. The sophomore allowed just one run on six hits while walking two and fanning two.
Ziegler, Putich and Corder tallied two hits apiece to lead the Gauchos at the plate while Jennings, McDonald and Perez all had multiple RBI in the victory.
In Friday's first game, Creighton got out to an early 2-0 lead at the top of the first inning off of an RBI double by Renae Sinkler and an RBI bunt single by Michelle Koch.
The Gauchos were able to cut the Bluejays' lead to one at the bottom of third. Ziegler hit a one-out single and Jennings walked one out later to put two runners on base. Jessica Beristianos followed with a single to right center field that drove Ziegler home.
Creighton responded at the top of the next inning with two more runs scored off of an RBI double by Liz McKewon and the second double of the game by Sinkler. The Bluejays added one more run in the sixth inning when Sinkler drove McKewon home on a sacrifice fly to put the final score at 5-1.
MeLinda Matsumoto (3-4) took the loss after allowing four runs - one earned - on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. She walked two and struck out one. Lindsey Correa pitched 3.1 innings of relief and allowed one earned run on three hits. She struck out four and did not allow a walk.
At the plate, Ziegler went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base while Beristianos went 2-for-3 with the lone Gaucho RBI.
The Gauchos will continue action at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational on Saturday against host No. 9 Arizona State at 4:30 p.m. and Samford at 6:30 p.m. The tournament runs through Sunday at the Sun Devils' Farrington Stadium.
