UCSB Comes Through Late, Outlasts Longwood 2-1
March 11, 2006
HONOLULU, Haw. - Freshman second baseman Christine Ramos, who has played well all week, went 2-for-4 and drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth as UC Santa Barbara closed out the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Longwood University Saturday morning.
The Gauchos, who have won their last three after dropping both games Wednesday to start the tournament, improve to 12-9 overall. The Lancers dropped to 9-11 with the loss.
As they have done lately, UCSB used a one-run, three hit first inning to take the early lead. With Jessica Hejna on second base and Kendra Singley on first base in the top of the first inning, freshman first baseman Tiffany Wright hit a one-out single to drive home Hejna. The Gauchos had an opportunity to increase their lead when they had bases loaded with one out, but starting pitcher Rachel Mills and the Lancer defense recovered to retire the next two batters and close out the inning.
The Lancers tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Emily Radford that scored Mallory Gordon.
UCSB broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth after Shelby Hensler was placed on second base per international tournament rules to start the inning. Freshman right fielder Jackie Conlin followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Hensler to third base. Hensler came home to score the game-winning run on a ground out to second base hit by Christine Ramos.
Starting pitcher Jennifer Davis took care of the Lancers in the bottom half of the inning and went on to win her second straight victory. She gave up one run on five hits, while striking out 13 and walking none and improves to 8-6 on the year.
Mills, who was solid in the circle for the Lancers, took the loss and fell to 7-8. After giving up three hits in the first inning, she only allowed two over the final seven innings.
The Gauchos return home next week when they host Radford in a doubleheader Thursday, March 16, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Campus Diamond.
