Tigers Complete Sweep With 1-0 Win Over Gauchos

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific softball team completed its sweep over UC Santa Barbara with a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. The Tigers scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to pick up their third straight one-run win of the weekend over the Gauchos.

With the loss, UCSB falls to 20-14 overall and 0-6 in Big West play. The Gauchos' current losing streak has been extended to six straight games. Pacific is now 28-13 overall and 3-0 in conference games.

The Tigers defeated the Gauchos twice on Friday in a pair of eight inning games by way of 3-2 and 5-4 scores to open the series.

Freshman pitcher MeLinda Matsumoto took the loss for UCSB after allowing one earned run on four hits while walking three and striking out four in six innings of work. The Union City, Calif. native is now 9-3 on the season. Sophomore Christine Ramos was 1-for-4 while junior Ericka Hansen went 1-for-2 with a walk at the plate for the Gauchos. Each team left eight runners on base during the game.

Hurler Chelsea Engle led the Tigers throwing a two-hitter, walking two and striking out three UCSB batters. Engle is now 15-9 on the season. Casey Goldsand went 1-for-3 with an RBI leading Pacific at the plate.

Deadlocked at 0-0 at the bottom of the sixth inning, Alyce Jorgensen led off with a walk and a sac bunt advanced the runner to scoring position. Goldsand singled up the middle to bring the runner home to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

At the top of the seventh, Hansen led off with a single to the shortstop and Adrienne Anderson reached after getting hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Nicole Churnock advanced both runners, but Engle took down the next two batters to end the inning and earn the Tigers the 1-0 win.

Santa Barbara will take a break from conference action next week when they head to Fresno, Calif. to take on No. 24 Fresno State in a doubleheader set to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Gauchos will return to Campus Diamond next Saturday and Sunday to take on future Big West opponent UC Davis in a three game series.
