FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Krista Cobb held Fresno State - a team ranked No. 22 nationally in the ESPN/USA Softball Poll - to just two hits on Monday night as the Gauchos won game two of a non-conference doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond by way of a 1-0 score. Fresno State (24-16) defeated UCSB (19-17) in the first game, 3-1.
The lone run of the second game was scored at the top of the fifth inning. Katie McWhirter led off with a walk and one out later, Brooke Putich hit a single to second base. An error by the Fresno State shortstop during the next play allowed Christine Ramos to reach first base and McWhirter to score the unearned run. Ramos stole second before the next two batters went down in order.
After Cobb threw five hitless innings, Fresno State was finally able to tally its first hit of the game at the bottom of the sixth when Haley Perkins hit a one out single to right center, but after a fly out to left field by Haley Gilleland, Perkins was caught stealing to end the inning.
Cobb struck out three of four batters swinging in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 1-0 victory for the Gauchos, snapping a four game losing skid.
Cobb (12-5) allowed just one walk and struck out five during the complete game performance. Morgan Melloh (18-12) took the loss for Fresno after tossing her second complete game of the evening. She allowed just one unearned run on four hits. She walked two and fanned 12.
Jessica Beristianos led the team, going 2-for-3 in the win.
During the first game of the evening, the pitching was solid on both sides through the first four innings. Melloh held the Gauchos to just one hit and UCSB pitcher MeLinda Matsumoto contained the Bulldogs to four.
At the bottom of the fifth, Lisamarie Coronado led off with a single to left field and then an error by Ramos at second base allowed Brooke Phipps to reach first during the next at-bat. A single to center field from Mallory Perkins loaded the bases with no outs. The Gauchos earned the first out of the inning when Haley Perkins hit into a fielder's choice, but a single by Gilleland drove home the first run of the game during the next play. A fielder's choice RBI by Michelle Moses and a sac fly from Alexis Lujan stretched Fresno's lead to 3-0.
Trailing by three at the top of the seventh, Jessica Ziegler led off with a double down the left field line and one out later, Beristianos had a base hit down the right field line, driving Ziegler home. The Bulldogs closed down the inning with a fielder's choice and a strikeout to hold on for the 3-1 win.
Melloh picked up the win after tossing the complete game. She allowed one earned run on three hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
Matsumoto (2-7) took the loss after tossing six innings. She allowed three runs - just one earned - on eight hits. She had no walks and no strikeouts.
At the plate, Ziegler led the way going 1-for-2 with her double and run. Beristianos and Ramos had the other two hits for UCSB.
The Gauchos will return to Campus Diamond on Friday when they host Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader scheduled for noon on Friday and will conclude the three-game series with a single game at noon on Saturday.
